Daniel Kemble - Great Grandfather 1877 - 1935
Daniel was my great grandfather. He apparently jumped ship in Liverpool from his birthplace in the United States in 1877 and settled, then married, on Merseyside. His wife was Anne Fagan, died aged 81, and they lie together in Wallasey's Rake Lane cemetery. Since 2002 they have been joined by their daughter Eileen who was 83 when she passed away. They also had a son, Harold, my grandfather, who is buried in the same cemetery along with his lovely wife Phyllis Syndrey Burgess. I was only 6 when Phyllis died, so cannot recall her at all, but remember my Grandad well. His son Phillip, was my father, now deceased, and their daughter Valerie, my aunt, still resides in Liscard. Another child, Brian, lived in North Wales and I believe died in 2001. Daniel was accidentally killed in 1935, aged 58, whilst onboard the MV Cheshire, a ship belonging to the Bibby Line. This is all that is engraved on his stone. Through a ships nostalgia forum on the internet, I have been passed a couple of sites of interest, containing, amongst others, images of the Cheshire. Here are those images, reproduced from that site. The first image is from: http://www.clydesite.co.uk/clydebuilt/viewship.asp?id=894 |

The last image, I would guess, as being of WW2 vintage, when she was a Troop Ship. The MV Cheshire was built on Clydeside, Scotland, at Fairfield Govan, Yard 620. Launched on Wednesday 20th April 1927. Home port was Liverpool. Ship Type: Passenger Vessel. Tonnage: 10550 grt. Length: 483.6 feet. Breadth: 60.3 feet. Draught: 31.8 feet. Owner History: Bibby Line Ltd, Liverpool. Status: Scrapped - 1957. Converted to troopship for WWII service. Restored to passenger ship 1948 but converted again for trooping 1953 before scrapping at Newport South Wales. |

Obviously the time frame I am interested in if possible, is from her launch to October 1st 1935, when my great grandfather was killed. At the time of writing I do not know the circumstances or where she was in the world.

I have deliberately darkened this so that the lettering stands out a bit better. |
